Mary’s Place Spring 2016
On a Monday evening this Spring, WPIG members arrived at Mary’s Place’ in North Seattle with desserts in hand, ready to learn more about Mary’s Place and interact with the families. WPIG is a big supporter of Mary’s Place, who is well known in the community and whose mission aligns well with WPIG’s : Empowering women, children and families to reclaim their lives by providing shelter, nourishment, resources, healing and hope in a safe community.
The North Seattle shelter is one of their newer shelter’s for the organization that opened last summer. WPIG members started off the evening with a tour of the building by the dedicated staff. They were impressed to see all the services that this new space allows for – including room for families to sleep, do laundry, and pick up essentials (toiletries, diapers, clothes, even houseware if they are lucky to get a home). In addition this shelter has the space for an impressive kid’s area so kids can be kids, as well as teen areas with computers so kids can keep up with their school work. There are also much-needed private areas for health visits and counseling to help the women & men to get back on their feet.
After the tour, the WPIG members headed back to the kitchen/eating/main area to get the opportunity to interact with the families and especially play with the kids. The kids were welcoming, energetic and after over an hour of coloring, playing, and some hair-braiding too – WPIG members left exhausted (where do those kids get all that energy?!) but full of admiration for the families and the staff at Mary’s Place. We are already looking forward to our next opportunity to be able to support such an amazing organization.
